The Puretec FilterWall™ F Series is one of the most popular whole house water filters in Australian homes, particularly the FilterWall F5 and FilterWall F6. From the outside they look almost identical but the difference is on the inside: each model uses a different combination of filter cartridges, designed for a different kind of water.

By the end of this guide you'll understand the difference between the F5 and F6, which contaminants each one reduces, how their flow rates and installation options compare, what the replacement cartridges are and most importantly, which model best suits your water supply.

How to choose between the F5 or F6

The F5 and F6 are both for filtering mains/ town water and have the same casing. Where they differ are the cartidges inside in stage of filtration.

So the question to ask is: "Do you have hard water that produces scale build up?"

  • No: then F5 is best for you as it filters chlorine & sediment out for great tasting water
  • Yes: then the F6 is best for you as it reduces scale in hard water PLUS filtering chlorine & sediment out for great tasting water

Puretec FilterWall F5 overview

The F5 is an excellent choice for homes that are on town (mains) water with low hardness, that want better-tasting water from every tap, that want to protect appliances from sediment, and that want cleaner, gentler water in the shower. Here's what each of its three cartridges does:

  • Stage 1 — Pleated sediment cartridge (PL20MP2, 20 micron): Captures the larger, coarse particles such as sand, grit, dirt and rust flakes.
  • Stage 2 — Polyspun sediment cartridge (PX05MP2, 5 micron): A finer filter that catches the smaller sediment the first stage lets through
  • Stage 3 — Carbon block cartridge (CB10MP2): This is the taste-and-smell stage. It reduces chlorine, along with the tastes, odours and chemicals that come with it, leaving noticeably cleaner, fresher water.

Puretec FilterWall F6 overview

The F6 uses a cartridge combination, designed specifically for homes with town (mains) water with high hardness that causes scale. It delivers excellent chlorine and sediment filtration with a third stage to tackle hardness-related problems. Here's the line-up:

  • Stage 1 — Polyspun sediment cartridge (PX05MP2, 5 micron): Removes sediment and fine particles.
  • Stage 2 — Carbon block cartridge (CB10MP2): Reduces chlorine, taste and odour.
  • Stage 3 — ScaleProtect™ cartridge (SCALEPROTECT-MP2): Conditions the water so dissolved calcium and magnesium don't form hard scale on your taps, shower screens, hot water system and dishwasher. Importantly, it does this while leaving those important minerals in your water.

FilterWall maintenance

The cartridges should be replaced every 6 to 12 months, or sooner if you notice a change in taste, odour or a drop in flow. How long they last depends on your water quality and how much sediment your supply carries. Key features to make it easy to maintain your FilterWall:

  • Pressure gauge panel: when requiring a filter change you will observe a higher pressure on the inlet side pressure gauge, compared to the outlet gauge. This is an indicator to say the filters are blocking up and therefore reducing your house water pressure and flow.
  • Integrated bypass valve: when it's time to service the system or change cartridges, you simply switch to bypass. This means that water keeps flowing to your home while you work on the filter.
  • FilterWall maintenance kits: you can purchase kits to maintain your system, so it takes all the guess work out of finding replacements. Also using genuine Puretec replacement cartridges will keep your warranty valid.

What does scale look like?

Look for these signs for hard water scale:

  • White, chalky marks on shower screens and glass
  • Scale crust building up inside the kettle
  • Spotty residue on taps, sinks and dishes

Scale build up is not only an eye sore but can also damage appliances, fittings and pipes. If you detect scale, it's recommended to purchase the FilterWall F6 to protect your home.

Installation options

The FilterWall is a freestanding, point-of-entry system — it's installed where the mains water supply enters your home, and filters every tap from there. It's designed to be mounted in one of three ways, which gives it the flexibility to suit both new builds and retrofit installations:

  • Post-mounted: Using the supplied galvanised mounting posts, set into concrete in a garden bed or similar. This is the go-to method where there's no existing slab — commonly along a fence line or the side of the house.
  • Bolted to a slab: Where a flat, smooth concrete surface is available, the unit is secured directly to it using the supplied sleeve anchors.
  • Wall-mounted: The unit can be mounted to a suitable wall where appropriate, using fixings into the rear of the enclosure.
