When the winter rain sets in across Victoria, water has a way of finding the lowest point on your property and sitting there in a sump, a stormwater pit, a flooded cellar or a low corner of the yard. A good submersible pump is the quickest way to clear out the water and protect your property. The Bianco Pumpz VAS2 has range of submersible pump options, this guide breaks it down so you can land on the right pump.

But what is a submersible pump exactly? Simply, it is a pump that sits fully underwater and pushes water up and out.

What do you use one for?

  • Clearing flooded sumps and stormwater pits
  • Dewatering cellars, basements and garages
  • Emptying drainage pits and catch basins
  • Clearing greywater and light slurry from ditches, ponds and drains
  • Transferring water out of tanks and troughs

The Bianco Pumpz VAS2 range at a glance

The Bianco VAS2 range is built for clean or slightly dirty water with soft solids (stormwater, drainage and greywater) and not raw sewage or heavy solids.

A few quick definitions for the table above:

  • Max head is how high (or far) the pump can push water — the greater the head, the higher the lift before flow drops away.
  • Max flow is how much water it shifts at its best, measured in litres per minute.
  • Solids is the largest soft particle the pump can pass without clogging.
  • Float every pump comes in two versions. Standard model with a cable float and an FF model with a fixed float.

Do you need a cable float or fixed float?

Cable float — the standard models

On the standard models, the float hangs from a length of cable and swings upward as the water rises, switching the pump on. As the water drops, the float falls and switches the pump off. Because the float swings through a wide arc, there's a generous gap between the "on" and "off" water levels.

Work best for:

  • That wide switching range, also means fewer starts and stops, which is easier on the motor and gives the pump a longer, quieter life.
  • Wider, deeper pits, sumps and tanks where there's space around the pump so that the float can swing freely.

Fixed vertical float — the FF models

On the FF models, the float is fixed vertically to the pump body and flips over a much shorter travel. It takes up almost no extra space, so the pump can work in narrow or shallow pits where a cable float would have nowhere to swing.

Work best for:

  • Compact spaces
  • Smaller, shallow pits
